There has been a sharp increase in the number of fund managers seeking advice about relocating out of the UK in 2010, according to the founder and chief executive of Laven Partners, the hedge fund consultancy.

Jerome Lussan said interest has been spurred by the prospect of tighter regulations, tax rises and by the potential threat to the alternative investment management industry posed by the draft Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive, which promises to introduce new regulations in the EU.

Since the beginning of the year, Laven Partners has received an 80% increase in fund manager queries relating to relocation from the UK compared with the previous year, he said. “As 6 April approached it was like a wake-up call, it was phenomenal.”

Lussan said re-location was not easy and his task was to educate people about the process. “Even moving to Switzerland is not simple and has its limitations.

Our job is to find the right place, and maybe not move everyone overseas but have people in different locations. There is a lot of work to be done, such as dealing with regulatory bodies and the authorities, and many complications to moving abroad. It takes a lot of planning.”
